Description:

Ichigo is out on a hot date with her 'crush' when suddenly she's involved in an odd incident in which her DNA is merged with the DNA of an almost extinct wildcat. When four other girls' DNA is merged with the DNA of four other almost extinct animals, it's apparent that they're part of a much bigger plan. Ichigo and her friends have been chosen to become a part of a secret project called the "Mew Project." Their mission: To protect the planet from aliens who are using the planet's animals to attack humans.

Review:

Want magical girl fun? Who doesn’t! Tokyo Mew Mew follows every cliché associated with the genre. The girls transform, have cute names, color coordinated uniforms, invoke magical powers, and fight against evil forces from another world. You name the convention, it's in here.

One thing that is slightly distinctive about this series would be the ecological awareness. Most Japanese culture is preachy about their ecological issues since Japan is industrialized. There are few parks and nature in the industrial areas of Japan, so they keep the environment on the forefront of their minds.

Tokyo Mew Mew is lighthearted and takes up endangered species as inspiration for each girl’s powers. Unforunately, this series lacks true artistic merit. The paneling is confusing and not well thought out, making the continuity difficult to discern. Perhaps the art is cute, but it appears rushed and messy. The one shot art work found in the creator’s art book is much more enjoyable.

Manga deadlines are fierce and the quality of this title definitely suffered. Despite the sloppy art, Tokyo Mew Mew is still very cute, if somewhat simplistic in nature. Obviously aimed at younger audiences, this title is fluff without much filler. There is a question about who Ichigo will end up with, but there are too many suitors and she ends up with the least likable one. The conclusion feels rushed. Seven volumes and it feels like nothing really happened. Buy it, but don’t put it on the top of your list.

Pros: Cute, lovable, and fun. Perfect material for cosplay!

Cons: Hard to read, clichéd, and perhaps better for the younger crowd.

Try: Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, Cardcaptor Sakura
